Hoover Fire Department Makes Donation C A N C E R C E N T E R For triple negative breast cancer patients (205) 975-7912 The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center recently finished its first FreshStart! program, a free eight-week series of classes geared to help cancer survivors adopt healthier lifestyle behaviors. With the help of supporters Cooking Light magazine and the Norma Livingston Ovarian Cancer Foundation, the program helped cancer survivors make healthy diet and exercise choices and better manage stress. Cancer survivors now make up 4 percent of the population in the United States and are more likely to have health issues like obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis, lung disease and cardiovascular disease after a cancer diagnosis. Topics during the classes included basic nutrition and meal planning, super foods and supplements, physical activity, relaxation and stress relief. “FreshStart! is designed to support positive behavior change that is so important for healthy outcomes and survival,” says Teri Hoenemeyer, director of Education and Support Services at the Cancer Center. “Research indicates that survivors are more willing to consider behavior changes following a cancer diagnosis. However, in many communities, they lack the support and resources needed to do this. We are very fortunate to have UAB in our own community and, with that, the research, resources and expertise it offers to survivors. And, programs like FreshStart! help connect survivors to support and services needed for a permanent shift toward a healthier lifestyle.” # K N O W U A B C C C C ANCER CENTER SUPPORT GROUPS BR AIN BUDDIES For patients with malignant brain tumors and their families Cathie Robinson (205) 934-2921 NEW BEGINNINGS For newly diagnosed breast cancer patients (205) 801-8266 or 1 (800) 333-6543 C ANSURVIVE GYN C ANCER SUPPORT GROUP For ovarian, cervical and endometrial cancer patients (205) 934-7509 LEUKEMIA AND LYMPHOMA SOCIET Y PATIENT AND FAMILY SUPPORT GROUP (205) 934-5772 SPIRITUALIT Y GROUP (205) 801-7050 LOOK GOOD FEEL BET TER (205) 502-9958 YOUNG BREA ST C ANCER SURVIVORS SUPPORT GROUP For those diagnosed before the age of 45 (205) 975-8656 VISIT UAB.EDU/C ANCER FOR A COMPLETE LISTING • U A B .
