EDUCATION & TRAINING
UAB’ s Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery continues to enhance and expand its reputation as a center for training, research, and education. Our faculty is committed to the education of college students, medical students, general surgery residents, and CT surgery fellows.
General surgery and CV surgery residents participate in a variety of clinical and research activities. Some have presented their projects at the AATS and STSA.

In 2014-15, the cardiothoracic residency program saw a record number of applications through the online ERAS recruiting system for general surgery residents seeking training in cardiothoracic surgery, with 75 residents requesting interviews. We narrowed down that pool, and on May 11, 2015, we interviewed 29 candidates – another record for our thoracic surgery program – and they were ranked and certified utilizing the NRMP“ match” system.
International Medical Students & Residents
International medical students and residents outside the realm of the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education continue to request training and education with our program. These individuals come to us completely self-funded, with a strong desire to visit with and learn from our faculty, while in turn helping the division by participating in outcomes research used for journal publications.
Summer Scholars Research Program
In 2013-2014, 24 medical students, 2 college students, and 2 international visiting scholars participated in our division’ s Summer Scholars Research Program. This innovative effort allows medical students to immerse themselves in the field of cardiothoracic surgery at the end of their first year of medical school. A dedicated faculty member mentors each student through a research project, and students also gain clinical experience by shadowing CVS faculty in clinic, rounds, and the operating room. They are provided didactic sessions to enhance their knowledge of evidence-based medicine. A majority of our students attain a publication and / or the opportunity to present their research at a national meeting. Some have even been awarded scholarships sponsored by the STS and AATS. www. uabmedicine. org 45
