FETAL DIAGNOSIS AND CARE CLINIC
The UAB Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program partners with the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine to care for pregnant women with adult congenital heart disease( ACHD). This relationship is represented by the UAB Fetal Diagnosis and Care Clinic, which is the only multidisciplinary prenatal diagnosis clinic in Alabama. It offers a single-platform continuum of care, from prenatal development through adulthood, for patients with congenital heart disease. Our cardiovascular surgeons have operated on patients literally within minutes of birth.
The team consists of expert physicians and clinical staff from Pediatric and Adult Cardiology, Maternal- Fetal Medicine( high-risk obstetrics), Cardiovascular Surgery, Neonatology, Obstetrics, and Cardiovascular Anesthesia. This multidisciplinary team determines the most suitable care plan for each patient based on the diagnosis, which is important given that the risk of an adverse event in pregnant women with congenital heart disease can be as high as 19 percent.
Common intrauterine conditions include:
• Hypoplastic left heart syndrome
• Single ventricle
• Complex atrioventricular canal defect www. uabmedicine. org 31
