STAT mortality categories were developed by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery as a method to stratify pediatric cardiac surgical operations by risk. STAT mortality categories allow comparisons among congenital heart surgery programs with regard to results across all levels of surgical complexity.
STAT 1 category operations represent the least complex procedures and therefore have the lowest expected mortality risk. STAT 5 operations are at the opposite end of the spectrum and have the highest expected mortality.
In 2015, UAB had outstanding results across all five STAT categories, but in particular UAB / COA exceeded national benchmarks in the two most complex categories, STAT 4( 5.3 %) and STAT 5( 7.7 %). Our 2015 overall hospital mortality rate for all pediatric cardiac operations was 2.3 %
