TYGART TODAY
Woodlands Development Group purchased the Tygart in 2017 for $ 700,000 . The non-profit organization worked with the community to develop a plan to restore the historic building to a 56-room boutique hotel with a restaurant , lobby bar , and small conference room . Constructed in 1906 , the Tygart Hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is an anchor in Elkins ’ Downtown Historic District . In 2022 Woodlands finalized a financing package totaling over $ 18.9 million and began construction .

The project is funded through a complex package of Historic tax credit investments from local community banks , New Markets Tax Credit investments , CDFI lending , local investments and support ,
National Register of Historic Places plaque located on front facade traditional borrowing and grants . The literal and figurative buy-in from the local community inspired and leveraged significant investment in this ambitious project from out of town entities . These types of investments are not common in communities as small as Elkins and they speak to the great potential and need for development of this nature in Randolph County .
The Tygart Hotel project has already spurred additional private investment and redevelopment in the area and Woodlands hopes that the hotel continues to support much-needed housing and community development in Elkins and the surrounding area .
Woodlands worked with Mills Group to design the project and Stonemile Group to implement the rehabilitation . The redesign adheres to the Secretary of the Interior ’ s Standards for Historic Preservation and preserves many of the iconic elements from the original construction . The décor further emphasizes the places , people , and industries that shaped our history and community .
The renovation was an enormous undertaking that required reworking floor plans , rebuilding basic infrastructure , and significant updates to the building from the basement to the roof . As with any building of this age , surprises were encountered and unexpected challenges occurred . Thanks to the dedication and skill of the project partners , we worked through the issues and are able to host you here today .
