tyddynmon.co.uk Red Squirrel Project At the beginning of October we were pleased to welcome Dr Raj Jones from the Red Squirrel Trust Wales to the farm to launch our new Red Squirrel project. 10 years ago the red squirrel population on Anglesey was close to extinction, with only around 40 adults left. Today the number stands at around 700 thanks to the eradication of the nonnative grey squirrels from the island, which carry diseases and compete with the reds for resources, and the hard work of organisations such as the Red Squirrel Trust Wales. We are supporting the work of the trust by launching our new project, which has included placing a number of feeders around the grounds, which we hope will attract some red squirrels to the farm, from neighbouring areas such as Dulas and Llaneilian, where they are often seen. The trainees have been heavily involved in the project by filling the feeders and also making them in the workshop, these have been on sale at our pop up shop over the last couple of weeks. Everyone has been busy in the pottery workshop too by making squirrel mugs, which have also been on sale in our shop. You can find out more about Red Squirrels on Anglesey by visiting the Red Squirrel Trust Wales’s website at www.redsquirrels.info New Bird Feeders Kerry and Daniel filling the new squirrel feeders George (staff supervisor) putting up the feeders We would also like to thank Dr Raj Jones for donating a number of bird feeders, which have since been placed around grounds. We are hoping that the bird feeders along with the one’s for the squirrels will attract a range of new wildlife to the farm.
