THE RICHARD BURKE TY Following on the success of the 2017 awards, TYI will once again be hosting the Richard Burke TY Personified Award in 2018. The award aims to identify those students who best represent the Mission and Aims of TY and who have been proactive in fulfilling their own potential. Pictured (left) at the launch in April 2017 is Jim Daly, Fine Gael Cork South West TD and Chairman of the Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs The award was launched in April 2017 by Minister Jim Daly and the first winners of the awards were announced at the TY EXPO 2017 in Punchestown in September 2017. ! The award is named after Richard Burke, Minister of Education who in 1974 announced his Transition Year brainchild at the Vocational Teachers Association (now TUI) Easter Conference in Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin. ! ! ! The family of Richard Burke are delighted with the award and his children attended the inaugural awards ceremony in September. ABOUT THE AWARD The award aims to identify the student who best represents the Mission and Aims of Transition Year and who has been proactive in fulfilling their own potential. Anyone can nominate!!! The competition is an annual opportunity for TY Service Providers, Parents, TY Coordinators & Teachers, Guidance Counsellors, Mentors and Employers to acknowledge the hard work and effort that an individual student put into their TY and to nominate them for recognition for a national award. T Y UPDATE SPRING 2018 Financial, ability and circumstantial divides are taken into consideration. ! OVERALL AIMS OF TY Education for maturity with the emphasis on personal development including social awareness and increased social competence. • The promotion of general, technical and academic skills with an emphasis on interdisciplinary and self- directed learning. • Education through experience of adult and working life as a basis for personal development and maturity. •
