Two Spirit and LGBT Native Americans | Page 17

Native Americans once respected and honored their Two Spirit people. They embraced their differences and did not choose to shun them or discriminate against them. Two Spirit people had their place in tribal culture that was based on balance, goodwill, and respect. They were even considered more than others and they were an essential part of their community. The colonization changed this and even affected how Native Americans today look at their LGBT members.

However, their old traditions present something that today's (Native and non-Native) society should take into great consideration: to not discriminate, but acknowledge and accept; to respect and honor its members who belong to any kind of minority.
