Colonization disturbed established Native traditions, including their beliefs in the fluidity of genders and gender roles; it stigmatized Two Spirit people, and that stigma can be found in tribal communities up to this day.

However, the memory of these once honored and celebrated people were kept alive and by group elders, activist, and even tribal medicine men and women. In some tribes, Two Spirit people are regaining their once held honor and respect from their community (Two Spirit History).
