Honda Point Horror
2
The US Navy is calling it the largest peacetime loss of Navy ships. Twenty-three sailors dead, gone, and not to return. Seven US destroyer ships are not torn apart from the disaster.
On September 8, eleven destroyer ships left port for a two day trip to San Francisco. Supposedly a routine journey that turned out into the Honda Point Disaster.
The two main reasons for the crash were not in attack. One was that of mother nature. Seven days before the disaster, and earthquake devastated Japan, causing the large swells and rough currents.
The other reason is due to the navigational errors of the Navy itself. This error caused the ships to head straight into the rocks near shore off the shore of Pedernales Point.
By 9:05 pm, the ships had crashed.
The ships crashed into the rocks at 20 knots, about 23 miles per hour. Twenty-three sailors died, the survivors were not resuced until September 9th in the afternoon due to the harsh weather conditions.
