Tual Lvieng Final Report | Page 6

Background

Tual Lvieng Primary School is located in the Sangker District of the north-western province of Battambang in Cambodia.

Before construction started on the new schhol building, there were seven classrooms to accommodate 272 students. Nearly 100 students used three temporary classrooms which were constructed of bamboo, wood and tarpaulins. These classrooms have now been replaced.

When it would rain, water fell on the students, teachers, tables and desks. The classrooms would flood during the rainy season and would become very hot in the dry season. There was also no library or safe, dry space to keep books for reading or research. The overall environment was unsafe and made it difficult for students to concentrate on their studies. These challenges were reflected in the high student dropout rates (16%) and repeat rates (17%).

For these reasons, a new building was urgently required. A new school building with four fully furnished classrooms and two new toilets has been built at Tual Lvieng Primary School. The students now have a positive learning space where they can meet their full potential and find joy in learning.
