At some point, every runner must ask these questions: Why do we do this? What keeps us putting one foot in front of the other when the distance seems daunting and the hills sometimes demand more than we seem to have?
Whether you’ re stinging up Southern Cross Drive or digging deep on those last few M3 miles, understanding your motivation and inner drivers is a powerful weapon come race day. Physical strength gets you to the start line, but a clear purpose is what carries your body home.
It’ s easy to feel inspired at the start line, but things are different when the tank starts emptying, or when you need to keep moving despite your body wanting to quit. I know, because I’ ve been there more than once, and it’ s my personal“ why” that has carried me to the finish straight.
We hope that this digimag may help you find your personal answers, by sharing the wisdom of experienced runners or learning from those who have travelled a difficult or unconventional road to achieve their goals. So, while you are training your legs, spend some time exercising your strongest muscle – your brain. Understanding your“ why” may be your saviour on race day.

The past two months have marked an exciting start to our 2027 season, with the opening of entries for the Totalsports TWO OCEANS MARATHON powered by BYD. We were thrilled to receive a record number of ballot applications, reaffirming the incredible demand for the world’ s most beautiful marathon. We would love to welcome every runner who applied, and therefore continue to explore ways of bringing more runners into the TTOM family.
One of the most exciting developments for 2027 is the launch of the Night Run, which will officially kick off race week. This fun and vibrant event will create a new opportunity for people to be part of race week, even if they are not yet ready to tackle the Half or Ultra Marathon. It also offers runners already entered in our longer-distance events the chance to share the joy of running with family and friends, extending the spirit of camaraderie and inclusivity that makes our sport so special.
For those runners who were unsuccessful in securing an entry through the ballot process, there are still opportunities to join us on the start line.
A number of charity entries will be available, allowing participants to support meaningful causes while achieving their running goals. In addition, our official substitution process will run from mid-November 2026 through March 2027, providing further opportunities to become part of this remarkable journey.
