THE SHIP’ S LOG

One of the traditions of the Totalsports TWO OCEANS MARATHON powered by BYD is The Ship’ s Log, a detailed list of every runner who has completed one or more of the races that form part of the event. The Ship’ s Log first appeared in the 1978 edition of the Two Oceans Marathon race brochure, with the name chosen to tie in with the nautical theme of the event. As such, a runner’ s successful finishes are referred to as‘ voyages.’

Runners who complete one of the TTOM events 10 times or more earn themselves a permanent number, which is dark blue for the Ultra Marathon, light blue for the Half Marathon or khaki for the Trail Runs.( The only other way to earn a permanent number is to win the Ultra, Half or Trail Run three times, or by earning five gold medals in the Ultra.) Collectively, these permanent numbers are known as Blue Numbers, and all holders become a member of the Blue Number Club( BNC). To date – up to and including the 2026 event – the total number of BNC names in The Ship’ s Log stands at 9366.

The Two Oceans Ultra Marathon has been run 55 times since 1970, and a total of 6720 runners have earned an Ultra Blue Number. While most of these runners joined the BNC thanks to completing the race 10 times, the small handful of 17 who earned Blue by winning the race three times, or earning five gold medals, includes six-time winner Gerda Steyn.
At the top of this Ultra Marathon Blue Number list are 12 runners with Quadruple Laurel Blue Numbers for 40 or more finishes, with a further 92 athletes( including four women) with Triple Laurel Blue Numbers for 30 or more finishes. The runner with the most voyages in the history of the race is Louis Massyn, who completed the race for the 48th time
