Our Chilly Stay at Royal
Villas in Mazatlan, Mexico
By Jean Borden
Our exchange was through RCI. For
some reason, all RCI exchangers MUST
use the All-inclusive program. We weren’t
too happy about that at first, but it worked
out very well for us. The food and drinks
were very good, and you couldn’t ask for
a more friendly and accommodating staff.
It’s a very comfortable place, though it was
extremely cold (for Mexico) most of the
week. It was strange to see the people at
the welcome desk wearing gloves, and
most all the staff who worked outside were
wearing heavy jackets and even caps. The
resort is open from the street to the ocean,
so it can become a wind tunnel, but not
often, I’m sure.
Our check in was quick and smooth.
We had a Palenque unit and were very
pleased. It was very roomy, with a full
kitchen and dining area, as well as a nice
sized living room with a comfy sofa and
chair, 2 bathrooms, a good sized bedroom,
with a 27” TV there and in the living room.
There were 2 large balconies, one off the
living room, and one off the bedroom, both
with ocean views. We found it a bit strange
that there was only a painting of some odd
colored fruit in the kitchen, but that was
the only other thing on the walls.
As All-Inclusive guests (evidenced
by waterproof bracelets attached to our
arms), we had our unit stocked daily with
beer, soft drinks, water, and snacks. Our
only maintenance request concerned the
fact that we had bottles of beer, but no
opener. I think our unit had been recently
repainted, because we could see where an
opener had been mounted by the sink,
Soon a happy maintenance guy appeared,
and mounted the new opener on the opposite side of the sink, leaving the old
holes undisturbed.
The hotel is pretty old, but the ambience is wonderful. It’s kept very clean and,
as someone else commented, it’s small
enough that you are quickly recognized,
and made to feel very welcome. We enjoyed the fact that there is a man who plays
the guitar in the restaurant at breakfast
and dinner, and the made to order omelets
were excellent. They didn’t have an outside breakfast buffet until about Thursday. We had arrived on Monday, but one
morning they had tamales, both regular
and sweet ones. I think it’s the first time
I’ve ever been able to find a tamale in
Mexico. They seem to be reserved for fes-
