New Mexico’s Secret Resort
By Dick Gemoets
Angel Fire Resort is probably the best
kept secret on the planet! This quaint and
beautiful resort community is nestled at
the base of Mt. Wheeler, the highest point
in New Mexico, in the gorgeous Moreno
Valley in the southern Rocky Mountains.
Angel Fire is only a three hour drive from
Albuquerque, NM, which is short compared to the four hour trip from Denver
Airport to Aspen Resort!
Angel Fire is a four-season paradise
that boasts among the longest ski runs in
the nation, powder-dry snow, a high speed
quad chairlift, family oriented runs, and a
half-pipe for snowboarders. Angel Fire is
blessed with winter temperatures that are
generally moderate, averaging mid-thirties
daytime to mid-teens in the early morning.
Average annual snowfall is 140" in the
valley and over 200" in the ski area. This
makes for ideal ski conditions: lots of fresh
groomed powder on a hard base with virtually none of those dreaded ice slicks.
In the land of brilliant sunlight, crystal clear, vivid blue sky, sparkling air, Angel Fire’s beautiful bright white snow, is
groomed to perfection on our 67 ski trails.

NM’s only two high speed quad chairlifts
whisk you 2,000 feet up the mountain so
you can glide down the uncrowded terrain. The ski area opens early December
and continue into late March (weather conditions permitting).
We mentioned that Angel Fire is regarded as a family oriented Resort. Not
only are there ski runs for every level of
skier, a great children’s ski school and a
huge game room, the lodging accommodations range from a couple in a studio to
multiple families in multiple homes located
near each other. Locations can be ski-in,
ski out condos to spacious five bedroom
homes a short distance to the slopes.
Perhaps you are more into golf than
skiing? How about an 18 hole PGA Championship golf course with a new Country
Club coming in 2009. At 8400 feet, snaking around the Moreno Valley, Angel Fire
Golf Resort is one of the more beautiful
courses you have sunk your cleats into.
Hiking or mountain biking? How
about hundreds of miles of national forest
trails, plus ATV and horse riding trails
abound. You may rent gear here or bring
your own; try trails on the ski mountain
(the lift will even carry your bike!) or go
for miles on any number of scenic trails in
and around our village. You’ll be amazed
at the spectacular views of surrounding
mountain peaks and valleys with many
photo ops along the way. Several of the
trails are also great for horseback riding
Fishing? How about 2 lakes stocked yearround (yes, even ice fishing!).
Angel Fire has four timeshare
projects, ranging from one-bedroom to
three-bedroom log cabins, though avail-
ability is limited.
