Lest you think we spent all our time
scurrying around Kauaʻi, let me assure
you we did our fair share of lounging
around the pools and on our lānaʻi or just
sitting under a ceiling fan, listening to
Hawaiian music while reading a novel.
The miniature golf course offered
several opportunities to hone our skill.
Then came the evening “males vs. fe-
males” card game competition. Males
eventually came back from a 4-0 defi cit
to win 5-4 on our last day on Kauaʻi.
Kauaʻi is called the Garden Isle
for good reason. Most of the places
you may visit on the island are indeed
covered in vegetation of every shade of
green you can imagine. Multi-colored
bougainvillea hedges surround many
properties. The bright orange fl owers
of the African tulip are prominent in all
the forested areas. Other trees offer gor-
geous fl owers of many bright hues. The
monkey pod trees cover such a gigantic
area that one tree can cover a couple of
aisles in a parking lot.
A mile-long eucalyptus “tree tun-
nel” lines Maliuhi Road on the way to
Kōloa and Poʻipū. Pineapple baron Wal-
ter McBryde was responsible for plant-
ing these 500 trees as a gift to the com-
munity in 1911.
I hope reading this gets you excited
to visit Kauaʻi. It is a great place to ex-
plore and to rest your weary bones—and
another advantage to visiting Kauaʻi is
you will meet some of the nicest people
