car at Vancouver International Airport . Having allowed plenty of extra time before boarding my flight , I roamed the terminal looking for a place to sit , and an electrical outlet from which to recharge my laptop computer .
The terminal was undergoing an extensive expansion ; seating and power were in short supply . Finally I found an outlet between a pair of restroom entrances . Seated on the corridor floor , I must have looked like I knew my way around because people kept stopping to ask me for directions .
My flight from Vancouver brought me to Dallas , TX , where I changed planes and took off at sunset for Miami . I was traveling away from the sun , so night fell swiftly .
As we climbed to cruising altitude , a two-hour fireworks extravaganza began to unfold below . All across the southeastern U . S ., one display after another erupted with comets , rockets , starbursts , shooting stars , and a proliferation of other pyrotechnic products .
It was a fitting welcome home after my fortnight “ abroad .”
