Other areas to consider include how the board conducts itself with respect to :

• Encouragement of and dealing with different points of view .
• Exhibiting camaraderie and a sense of humor .
• Follow-through on task assignments .
• Maintaining appropriate confidentiality relating to legal requirements and the business of individual owners .
• Maintaining high ethical standards .
• Supporting decisions of the boad .
• Honoring the spokesperson role of the president or chair .
• The relationship with management , including working together in the dynamic tension of partnership with management , and clarity about where the board ’ s role ends , and the management ’ s role begins .
You may also want to include a section for board members to rate their own individual performance along with the performance of the board as a whole .
Invite input
Ask board members and management to complete the evaluation tool and invite anyone else who works regularly with your board — including your consultants , attorney , and auditor — to complete those sections of the questionnaire where they have had relevant experience with the board . If they work with other boards , their comments may have particular value .
Put a notice in your newsletter announcing that you will be assessing the board , inviting owners who have had contact with the board , either through correspondence or attendance at meetings , to submit comments , observations , and suggestions .
Finally , schedule a retreat for the board and management to thoroughly discuss the results and potential improvements in the board ’ s functioning and processes .

The most important outcomes of a Board of Directors Self-Assessment are :
• An in-depth discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of the board .
• Identification of issues that need to be addressed or clarified .

Publish a summary of the assessment results in your newsletter and report it at the annual meeting . The owners will appreciate knowing that their board is held to exacting standards , is interested in continuous improvement , and is working on fulfilling all of its responsibilities .
