The community ’ s growth
Initially settled in 1825 through a treaty with the Creek peoples , the town was first named Hixson . After a small gold rush , it was renamed Villa Rica (“ Rich Village ”) in 1881 .
Fairfield Plantation began construction in the 1970s , and the timeshares were developed soon after , thus carrying the Fairfield name . The total residential area is a 2,400-acre gated community with a population of 16,000 . The 48 timeshare units are a small part of the development and can be difficult to reserve .
They are located some distance from the front gate with several turns , so it ’ s best not to arrive for the first time after dark .
The front desk staff have always been very friendly and helpful . However , the office closes at 5 p . m . during the week , so call to ensure your key is at the gatehouse if you ’ re arriving late . There is a back east gate closer to the units , which can save time during certain hours .
A small swimming pool is near the units , but it is not heated , and we seldom visited when the weather was warm . The on-site Fairfield Country Club has a pool , an 18-hole golf course , and a restaurant and bar ; you can get a refundable $ 20 coupon upon checking in to use those facilities . The Dockside Marina , near the units , has a smaller restaurant and bar . There is a small seasonal beach that is some distance away by car .
We have never been asked to attend a timeshare sales presentation there , but occasionally , there would be phone calls to attend a “ free breakfast ” in the office ,

Outside the resort
Atlanta ’ s attractions are accessible with a 30- to 45-minute drive . The towns of Villa Rica to the north and Carrollton to the south offer more restaurant and grocery shopping opportunities . Villa Rica itself is a unique small town with a small mall of chain retailers , along with a historic street of smaller local businesses .
Fairfield Plantation was ideally located for us , being halfway between our home in Ohio and Florida . We had great friends in Douglasville , the Grimmers ; Ron met Hugh when they were stationed in Japan in 1963 in the Army . After we moved to Seattle , they kept our van so we could fly to Atlanta , pick up the van , and travel the East Coast .
A great friend , Edith Allen , lived in Atlanta but would stay with us to have a “ mini-vacation .” We helped her set up her 7th-grade math room one year while our children prepared her bulletin boards
Staying at the Plantation allowed us to avoid Atlanta traffic by taking SR 61 to Villa Rica . Not only was it so convenient , but it also truly felt like home since we stayed there so often and so comfortably to visit family and friends .
