Wykeham Patrons – In the Founder ’ s Footsteps - 13 th May & 26 th September
On 13 th May a select group of Patrons were educated and entertained by the architectural historian , Jeremy Musson . Fresh from writing one of a recent pair of articles about Winchester College in Country Life , Jeremy led a tour of the original buildings in Winchester College , before picking up the thread at Bishop ’ s Waltham Palace . Both had the imprint of William of Wykeham and his three principal contractors : William Wynford , builder and mason ; Hugh Herland , carpenter ; and Thomas Glazier , glazier . Dinner and the tour of Bishop ’ s Waltham were thanks to the generosity of hosts Chris ( E , 83-88 ) and Serena Nicholls .
The theme was picked up at New College , Oxford where , as guests of the Warden , Miles Young ( GoBo , 16- ), the Wykeham Patrons held their annual dinner on 26 th September . Before dinner Patrons were entertained by tours of the New College Treasury , Muniments Tower , Chapel , Cloisters and Long Room .
Comparison of the three locations highlighted many Wykehamical themes , such as the installation of high-status mediaeval kitchens , the lavish use of roof trusses in lowly buildings : Winchester ’ s stables ; breweries and bakehouses in Hampshire ; and the Long Room in New College , essentially a multistation privy boasting a manor housestyle roof structure .

Goddard Day The first Saturday of Short Half seems to attract good weather and good crowds to Goddard Day , the annual celebration of those who have made provision for Win Coll in their Wills . Saturday 16 th September provided an opportunity for Goddard Society members to meet the recentlyinstalled Headmaster and enjoy a convivial lunch after Chapel .
