He worked for The Times 1956-9 ; The Observer ( Washington correspondent ) 1960- 5 ; as a TV reporter for ‘ This Week ’ 1965-7 ; and Sunday Times 1968-71 . He was one of the co-founders of Channel 4 News in 1982 and served as a presenter until 1985 . Director Reuters Foundation ; Fellow , Green Templeton College , Oxford 1993- 2001 ; Fellow , Rothermere American Institute , Oxford 2001 ; Hon Doctorate , University of the South , Sewanee , 2008 . He became a freelance writer , broadcaster and lecturer , especially on US politics and affairs , and the author of numerous books , articles and TV documentaries . In his later years , and in books including World Turned Right Side Up ( 1996 ) and More Equal Than Others ( 2004 ), he explained the forces behind the rise of global and domestic conservatism . He married ( 1 ) Alice Vidal in 1958 ( divorced 1969 ) and ( 2 ) Hilary Lamb in 1970 , who died in 2016 . He is survived by 2 sons from the first marriage and 2 daughters from the second .

Major Entrance Scholarship Maths and Physics , Trinity College Cambridge , 1953 ; Mathematics Tripos Prelim Pt 2 , 1954 , Pt2 1955 1st Class . Natural Sciences Tripos Part 2 Physics 1956 , 1st Class . Research in Theoretical Chemistry 1956-1959 ) BA , MA 1961 . Research Fellow 1958 ; Harkness Fellow of Commonwealth Fund 1959-61 ; Teaching Fellow 1961- 1985 ; University Lecturer 1965-67 . He then became a Scientist at the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology 1968-2000 ; Fellow of Royal Society 1989 . Retired Fellow Trinity College Cambridge 2002 . He was received Ad Portas in 2011 with other Wykehamist FRS ’ s and FBAs . Author of Introduction to Magnetic Resonance 1967 and scientific papers on theoretical chemistry and molecular biology . He was one of the founders of bio-informatics who published his first paper in 1969 , along with Sir Aoron Klug ( 1982 Nobel laureate in Chemistry ). ‘ Keenly opinionated . Trinity will surely miss his somewhat startling but always thought-provoking intelligence at High Table and College meetings .’ He will be remembered for his generosity towards young colleagues , his willingness to offer wise counsel and his modesty . He married Jennifer Kerr in 1959 who died in 2018 and is survived by their 2 sons .
Michael ( Mickey ) John James George Robert Howard , Earl of Suffolk and Berkshire ( E , 48-49 ); died 5.8.2022 . Grandson of HMPH . After a year at Win Coll , he completed his education in Switzerland , which he much preferred . and acquired a love of winter sports , becoming a daring aficionado of the Cresta Run and later competing in the British bobsleigh team . Sub-Lt RNVR . In 1941 he succeeded his father , who was awarded a posthumous GC for bomb disposal , as 21 st Earl of Suffolk and 14 th Earl of Berkshire . A keen aviator and horse breeder , he devoted his life to restoring the family seat at Charlton Park and improving its finances . He married ( 1 ) Simone Litman in 1960 ( marriage dissolved 1967 ); ( 2 ) Anita Fuglesang in 1973 ( marriage dissolved 1980 ); and ( 3 ) Linda Paravicini in 1983 , who survives him together with a daughter from the first marriage , a son and daughter from the second marriage and 2 daughters from his third marriage . David George Staveley Penny , Viscount Marchwood ( G , 49-54 ); died 3.10.2022 . Son of PGP , father of PGWP and NMSP . Co Prae ; Lords 1954 . 2Lt RH Guards 1955-7 in UK and Cyprus . He then joined Schweppes Ltd ( later Cadbury- Schweppes ) with whom he worked for 27 years , being responsible inter alia for businesses in Canada , France and Northern Europe at different times . He was appointed managing director of Moët & Chandon ( London ) Ltd and then chairman and managing director , Moët Hennessy , retiring in 2003 . He was president of the Royal Warrant Holders Association 2002-03 . His main recreations were real tennis , shooting , racing and golf . He also played cricket into his 60s and was a member of the MCC . He succeeded his father , becoming 3 rd Viscount , in 1979 . He married ( 1 ) Tessa Norris in 1964 , who died in 1997 , and ( 2 ) Sylva Willis Fleming in 2001 who survives him together with his 3 sons .
