Obituary

Henry Stuart Ramsay Watson ( F , 36-41 ); died 14.8.2022 . Brother of JIW , father of HAW . Co Prae . RAC 1941 ; 2 Lt 13th / 18th R Hussars 1942 . On D-Day , he was the regiment ’ s signals officer in its epic 5,000 yards swim in Duplex-Drive Sherman tanks to the Normandy Beaches ; he then continued to fight throughout the northwest Europe campaign . BAOR 1945-46 and MELF / FARELF 1948-50 ; GSO2 BAOR 1947 ; Staff College 1951 ; GSO2 HQ 1 ( Br ) Corps BAOR 1952-3 ; MBE 1954 ; Instructor RMA Sandhurst 1955-57 ; Malaya 1958-60 ; Instructor Staff College 1960-62 ; CO 13 / 18 H BAOR 1962-64 ; MA to CGS and staff of CDS MOD 1964-65 ; SHAPE 1965-68 ; Defence Policy Staff 1968 ; BGS HQ BAOR 1970-73 ; CBE 1973 ; Defence Policy Staff 1973-74 ; Senior Army Directing Staff RCDS 1975-76 as Major General ; Colonel 13 / 18 H 1979-90 . After retiring from the Army , he became Executive Director , Institute of Directors 1977-85 , Deputy Director General 1985-88 . Treasurers ’ Department Conservative Central Office 1989-96 ( Director 1992-94 ). ‘ A warm man with a willingness to listen , penetrating intellect and complete integrity , he commanded respect and affection among all ranks to an unusual degree .’ A very loyal OW . Brigadier John Richard Rigby ( C , 39-44 ); died 31.8.2022 . Grandfather of ANSR ; Co Prae , Head of House , English Speech , won High Jump . KRRC 1944 , 2 Lt 1946 in Palestine ; Army colour , High Jump . RA ( regular commission ) 1948 ; Tripoli and Canal Zone 1948-50 ; RHA 1949 ; Capt 1953 ; Staff Coll 1957 ; CO 94 Locating Regiment RA 1967-70 ; Directing Staff , Joint Services Staff College , Lt-Col ; Col , Hong Kong , 1971 ; Col , MoD 1974 ; Brig , Missile Range Outer Hebrides 1975 ; Comd Artillery TA Brigade 1977 ; ADC to HM The Queen 1978 ; retired 1980 . He then worked for the British Red Cross Society : deputy chairman Suffolk Red Cross 1990 . Churchwarden and chairman , Friends of Holy Trinity , Long Melford 1990-9 . A keen golfer , but most of all enjoyed family life with his 9 grandchildren . He married Patricia ( Tissa ) McKillop in 1956 , who survives him together with their 2 sons and daughter .
