The Trusty Servant
Wykeham Patrons ’ trip to Chevening House ; For the second time , a group of Wykeham Patrons made an overnight visit to Chevening , traditionally the residence of the Foreign Secretary , having been gifted to the nation by the last Earl of Stanhope in 1959 . During the visit , the current Foreign Secretary , James Cleverley , was reappointed , a matter of some interest to the house staff !
The group was finely entertained , not only by Alastair Mathewson , the Secretary to the Chevening Trustees , who gave a fascinating tour of the house and explained its history but also by some sumptuous food produced on site and delicious accompanying wines brought along by Simon Taylor ( F , 70-74 ) from Stone Vine and Sun . Over dinner , the health of the recently-appointed Prime Minister was proposed .
A Winchester College Football returns
Thanks to a generous donation by the Friends of Win Coll , the College Archives have purchased at auction a football used in VIs in 1870 .
This extremely rare survival has the names of the players stamped in gold lettering under the heading ‘ Winchester College Tutors Houses Football Six ’.
The team is named as : Sambrooke Thomas Higgins Burne , ( B , 67-72 ). Captain of OTH VI in 1870 and 1871 . Ernest John Humphrey ( A , 66-71 ) Frederic Walker Joy ( later Preston-Joy ) ( A , 66-71 ) Robert John Maude ( B , 66-70 )
Alastair Mathewson ( L ) conducting his tour
Thomas Snow ( C , 66-71 ) Albemarle Alexander Rawlinson ( B , 67-71 )
We won ’ t ever know which player kept the ball and had the names added – perhaps it was Burne , the Captain . All we can establish is that OTH VI beat College and lost to Commoners in matches played on 3 rd and 10 th December 1870 . The match against Commoners was a close tie but College were beaten 21-11 . Reports in The Wykehamist state that , ‘ Snow at second behind kicked fairly , but was not at all extraordinary . Among the ups , Burne played hard
Crown and Manor Club Crown & Manor continues to find exciting ways to attract new members . The Junior Club ( ages 8 to 11 ) opened in the Spring of 2022 , cautiously at first , but now five days a week . Numbers are rising as the word spreads . Football and basketball continue to thrive , alongside language classes , homework and reading support .
The summer months saw a successful summer camp for a fortnight . For a lucky few , there was also a fourday trip to Woodrow House in Buckinghamshire , kindly sponsored by Fidelity International . Being out of London in the heatwave was a godsend in itself but , with a focus on working as a team , the boys thoroughly enjoyed activities such as high ropes , archery , a tunnel maze and swimming , to name but a few .
For pupils leaving Winchester who might like to get involved , there are some opportunities for volunteering . Being London-based is vital as well as being happy to work in the evening and occasionally at the weekend .
