He specialised in catastrophic personal injury and was also a Mercantile , Commercial and Construction Mediator and a Deputy High Court Judge 1993-2005 . Deputy Judge of the Technology and Construction Court 1993-2005 , Chairman of Northern Circuit Commercial Bar Association 1996- 2002 ; Governing Bencher of the Inner Temple ; retired 2005 . Trustee of SPIRIT , a spinal injury charity based in Oswestry , the Bendrigg Trust , residential activities for disabled young people , and a founding trustee of Rusland Valley Community Trust . He was Churchwarden and Treasurer of Rusland Church and a member Carlisle Diocesan Synod . A lover of tennis and cricket , he was deputy groundsman of the Leven Valley Cricket Club . He married Katherine Wynne in 1984 , who died in 2009 , and he is survived by a son and a daughter .

His entrepreneurial career started at Survival Aids Ltd , 1981-86 ; then founder and managing director , Travelling Light Ltd , 1987-2003 , a hot-weather clothing company employing 150 people at its peak . The business gave him the perfect excuse to indulge his love of travel and adventure through photoshoots in warm locations . Cumbria Vision 2003-08 ; founder and director , Travelling2 , from 2008-11 . Councillor for Lowther ward on Eden District Council , where he served for many years . He was also Chairman of the County Committee for the Country Landowners Association and High Sheriff of Cumbria , 2004-05 . First chair of the trustees of Morland Choristers ’ Camp , founded by his father . In 2018 he was diagnosed with progressive supranuclear palsy , a rare degenerative condition . He married Suzanna Steel in 1976 ( marriage dissolved 2005 ). He is survived by his second wife Fay , together with 2 sons and a daughter from the first marriage , 2 sons predeceased .
David George Fossett Thompson ( F , 67-71 ); died 4.7.2021 . Exhibitioner and Scholar Magdalene College Cambridge 1972-75 . Conservative Research Department ; assistant area manager , Whitbread . He then joined the family firm , Wolverhampton & Dudley Breweries , in 1977 , managing director 1986 , chairman 2001 , overseeing the change of name to Marston ’ s in 2006 to reflect its expansion into a highly-profitable national pub player , which ran counter to accepted City wisdom . After leaving Marston ’ s in 2013 , he set up Anglia Maltings , which became the UK ’ s largest independent maltster . He was a member of the West Midlands Regional
Development Agency and the first chairman of the Wolverhampton Training and Enterprise Council , 1991-96 . A prominent member of the local community – he and his wife served as parish councillors in Boningale . A keen environmentalist who planted many trees and built a path to provide a public right of way on his land . ‘ A man of tremendous intellect and vigour , who was passionate about business , but also a convivial man with a great sense of humour .’ He married Marika Davies in 1980 , who survives him together with 3 daughters and a son . James Keith Shearer ( Coll , 68-72 ); died 3.5.2021 . Brother of IGS . King ’ s College Cambridge , Chinese Studies 1973-74 , Architecture 1974-77 , 1979- 81 : as a student he worked with renowned architect , Sir Richard MacCormac , and also spent a year in Tokyo . His 40-year career spanned many practices and continents , where his skill as a linguist often came into play : in Baghdad , on a project for the Ministry of Oil working with Italian designers and Yugoslavian contractors , he slipped effortlessly between Arabic , Italian and Serbo-Croat . After spells with Cambridge Design and Shankland Cox , he joined John Thompson and Partners , before moving to Broadway Malyan , and then Barton Willmore . He settled in Winchester while working as a senior associate for ADAM Urbanism and his last years were spent at Thrive Architects . He was at his most fulfilled when combining architecture with travel and languages ; on most of his trips abroad , most latterly to Cuba , he added bird-spotting , photography , sketching , music and socialising . His is survived by his partner , Carlos .
