Anyone interested in the history of Winchester around the time of Win Coll ’ s foundation might consider reading Charter for Murder the first in the Gentil Knight series by former Times journalist and historian Edward Fennell . This gripping mediaeval mystery is set in 1381 , year of the Peasants ’ Revolt , when murder and theft cause mayhem in Winchester ’ s Hyde Abbey . A returning crusader , the charming but troubled Sir Matthew Somborne , is commissioned by the acting Abbot to investigate . The book explores the complex politics of church and state at a time when William of Wykeham was setting up his new college and school .
