He enjoyed an active retirement as a dedicated reading helper with primary school children and was an energetic and conscientious guardian of overseas students . His reputation for contesting claims on behalf of commercial insurers soon earned him the nickname ‘ Firebug Fear ’. Lawrance Messer ( London ) 1977-89 ; legal adviser to Cunningham Hart 1992 and to the President of Chartered Institute of Loss Adjusters . Legal advisor and honourable secretary of Friends of the Elderly and Gentlefolk ’ s help . A love of music was stimulated at Winchester and he spent many evenings at Covent Garden , which he supported generously , and at the opera houses in Avignon , Orange and Aix-en-Provence . A keen golfer , tennis and fives player , he continued to tour the Midlands with his holiday tennis doubles partner whilst at law school , winning trophies against the strong and mighty . He married ( 1 ) Ingrid Ortner in 1960 and ( 2 ) Francoise Gordon in 1992 , who died in 2011 . He is survived by a daughter from the first marriage , a son predeceased in 1994 .

He became a publisher : commissioning editor , head of the education department and , in 1971 , director , of Edward Arnold . His creativity came to the fore promoting bold typography and graphics in books for schools . In the 1970s he took classes in typesetting and bookbinding and began printing letterpress in a studio in his back garden at Blackheath , with he and his wife establishing The Old Stile Press in 1980 . In the late 1980s , they moved to Tintern , where he designed each book and printed every sheet by hand , while Frances ran the business operation , commissioned bindings and made paper in the basement . Visiting artists and writers were also fascinated by the works of British neo-romantic artists that surrounded them .
