No . 132 The Trusty Servant during his retirement sailing became a passion , together with walking and foreign travel : this included treks to Nepal , the Grand Canyon and Sri Lanka , his birthplace . He married Rosamond Burn in 1958 , who died four weeks before him , and is survived by their 3 sons .

He was director of a manufacturing business in Glasgow 1960-79 ; director of a Lloyd ’ s Underwriting Agency 1980-98 , Run-off Syndicates Limited 1992-94 , retired 1999 . He first visited Colonsay in 1969 and was a frequent visitor thereafter . Latterly he spent most of his time there and was a crofter , busy investing in fencing and agricultural machinery , even recently buying a digger . He married Patricia Reid in 1960 , who died in 2013 , and is survived by their 2 daughters
Roger Briers Berry ( Coll , 42-46 ); died 22.8.2021 . School Exhibition . RN Engineering College , Plymouth 1947-50 ; HMS Liverpool 1950-52 ; RN College , Greenwich 1952- 4 ; MIMechE ; MIMarE . HMS Artemis 1955-6 . In 1955 he was appointed to the Naval Section at AERE Harwell in the small multidisciplinary team then working on the early steps towards submarine nuclear propulsion in the UK ; in 1958 he joined the recently formed Dreadnought Project Team . HMS Tartar 1963-5 ; HMS Triumph ; HMS Cheviot . From 1965 he held appointments in MoD , USA and Barrow-in-Furness , associated with design , procurement , building , commissioning of nuclear submarines ; Lt ( E ) 1950 ; Lt-Cdr 1958 ; Cdr 1968 . Civil Service ( RN Engineering Service and Royal Corps of Naval Constructors ) 1970-89 , with appointments in MoD and Devonport and Portsmouth Naval bases associated with the repair of nuclear submarines and general dockyard planning and management : he was proud to have been the last surviving member of the very exclusive OW Society of Submarine Engineer Officers ! He married Jean Shepheard in 1954 , who survives him , together with 2 sons .
Forbes Allan Fothergill Ellenberger ( E , 43-48 ); died 16.11.2016 . National Service 1948 , invalided . Exhibitioner , King ’ s College Cambridge 1949 , 2 Mech Sci , BA 1952 . He lived in Sri Lanka and died in the Seychelles . He is survived by a widow and a son .
David Gordon Gow ( E , 44-48 ); died 20.8 . 2021 . Brother of IREG , father of TG , stepfather of MA Freeman and brother-in-law of J Whatmore . VI 1948 . 2 Lt RM 1949 . He became a grain trader with Mitchell Cotts , Mardorf Peach and Associated British Foods . He travelled widely with work , which included an office in Antwerp , and wider still following his retirement in 1990 . He loved languages , horse racing and Chelsea Football Club equally , and was a crafty tennis player . Post-retirement he worked as treasurer of a housing trust in Alresford and a guide at Winchester Cathedral before his eyesight failed him - but not before moving to an apartment overlooking the College and the Cathedral , to complete the circle . He married Nicola Freeman in 1969 , who died in 1999 and is survived by his 2 sons , a stepson and a stepdaughter .
Simon William Batt ( E , 45-49 ); died 3.9.2021 . Son of WFB , brother of CWB , grandfather of GWHB . House socks for Gymna . RMAS 1950-52 ; Coldstream Guards 1952 , 2 Lt , temp Capt . Insurance broker , Wright Deen & Co 1957 , Willis Faber & Dumas 1969-89 . He played the piano and enjoyed all sorts of music from Bach to Cole Porter . A skilled carpenter , he made furniture from trees he had felled , and he also loved skiing , having met his wife in Zermatt . He was a long-term church warden and supporter of the local church , helping to grow the congregation from about 8 people to so many that a mezzanine had to be built in the church to fit everyone in . He married Julia Clayton in 1963 , who survives him , together with their 2 sons .
Anthony Gordon Merriman ( D , 45-49 ); died 16.6.2021 . Son of CAM ( Bursar , 38-52 ). Duncan Prizes . Special Entry RN 1950 , Lt 1954 , Lt- Cdr 1962 . From 1956 , he specialised in Hydrographic Surveying and spent much of the next 20 years charting waters in many parts of the globe . His last seagoing appointment was in command of HMS Beagle . In 1974 he joined the Storm Tide Warning Service – a unit set up to give warning of any repeat of the disastrous floods of 1953 . He worked at the MoD 1977-96 in the Tidal Branch of the Hydrographic Department . In the last years of his working life and for much of his retirement his main leisure activity was a former Salcombe lifeboat in which he attended both the 150th and 175th anniversaries of the RNLI . In 2007 , he joined owners of two similar boats to form the historic section of the RNLI flotilla which attended the centenary celebrations of the Swedish lifeboats in Göteborg .
