Andrew Clover ( Coll , 83-88 ) has just completed the series of seven books of Rory Branagan ( Detective ) - a series of funny , illustrated detective stories , whose ideal readers are boys or girls aged six to nine . Rory has a normal life - he has an evil brother and is friends with a sausage dog - but no one tells him anything . In particular they do not say why his dad disappeared when he was three . You have to read to Book 7 ( the most exciting of all ) to discover that Dad had a very good reason for being in hiding . Andrew Clover wishes to clarify that it is totally untrue that he learned about detectiving by sneaking over the rooftops of College , and climbing down drainpipes , once even peeking into the Warden ’ s Lodgings while he was there . That would have been a crime , and the sort of thing detectives fight against . 320 pages . Harper Collins . ISBN : 978-0008266011
Marine scientist and veterinarian , Michael J Moore ( I , 69-74 ), has
produced his first book , We Are All Whalers : The Plight of Whales and Our Responsibility . Drawing on over 40 years of fieldwork with humpback , pilot , fin , and , in particular , North Atlantic right whales – a species whose population has declined more than 20 % since 2017 – Moore takes us with him as he performs whale necropsies on animals stranded on beaches , in his independent research alongside whalers using explosive harpoons , and as he tracks injured whales to deliver sedatives . We learn of existing but poorly enforced conservation laws and of perennial ( and often failed ) efforts to balance the push for fisheries ’ profit versus the protection of endangered species caught by accident . All of us are whalers , Moore contends . But we do not have to be . 224 pages . University of Chicago Press . ISBN : 978-0226803043 .
