Chawker ’ s House Film and Live Conversation
On 6 May the Director ( F , 76-81 ) and James Hodgins ( Housedon 09-21 ) hosted a virtual evening for old Chawkerites . With well over a hundred on the call , this was clearly a draw for Chawkerites of all ages . The audience represented OWs who had been in the house between 1940 and 2018 . Previous housemasters Euan MacAlpine ( 77-81 ), David Baldwin ( 81-96 ) and Nick MacKinnon ( 96-09 ) recorded interviews beforehand and were all present to take part in live conversation .
We were particularly pleased to hear from Nicholas Shakespeare ( F , 70-74 ) and his father John ( F , 43-48 ), who were able to clear up the matter of some graffiti discovered by tour guide Rupert Hill ( F , 67-72 ). David Cairns ( F , 40-44 ) also spoke about how different Chawker ’ s had been during the War . Johnnie Stephens ( F , 57-61 ) gave a lament about the absence of tubs and tubroom .
To celebrate Winchester ’ s connection with this significant anniversary of exploration and climbing , an exhibition is planned in the Eccles Room for the week beginning 20th September with a lecture by Stephen Venables on Everest on Thursday 23rd September , the eve of the anniversary of Mallory and Bullock
In the light of this inaugural success , the format will be extended to other houses . Please respond to the plea above for editors who know their own boarding houses and past Housedons .
