From the Director
Six months in and it looks like I am here for good . I certainly can ’ t complain that it hasn ’ t been interesting ! First of all , there has been COVID-19 to contend with . The effects of COVID have pursued Win Coll Soc down a path bordered at times by frustration and uncertainty . To stay on it , we have had to practise flexibility , ingenuity and creativity . Events , which are at the core of what we do , have been postponed and often cancelled , but new ones have sprouted in their place . Audiences have increased and we are able to reach people who would not normally be able to take part . We might at times feel heartily sick of Teams and Zoom , but they have taught us a lot and held us together . I apologise that the usually enjoyable pictures of real people holding glasses ( see below ) are mostly replaced by fuzzy screen shots as a result .
We have learnt new skills and not all of them will be relinquished over the next 12 months . Filmmaking and broadcasting are two which will not accumulate dust on a shelf when normality returns , so lectures will be more accessible and I hope the quantity as well as the quality of filmed footage will persist . However , there is no substitute for the warmth and reassurance of a handshake and I hope that the slowly burgeoning list of parties below will provide plenty of opportunity for those .
The announcement of the new Vision for Win Coll has kept us on our toes . The postbag put on weight for a short while ( it was a balanced diet ) and we have assisted the school in putting together their series of parent information evenings during Common Time . There are working groups considering the addition of day and girl pupils to the establishment and even Win Coll Soc must be prepared for the addition of Old Wykehamistes ( probably not a term I will be allowed to use more than once in print ) to its membership .
Another area of growth is the collaboration we have formed with the Careers Department . The impetus of lockdown has allowed us to access more easily than before our impressive network of alumni and parents . Regular panel discussions will have covered a dozen career topics by the end of Cloister Time and post exams , we will draw on the experience of undergraduate Old Wykehamists to invigorate their descendants with their own experiences of the university application process .
In due course we hope to be backed by an up-to-date platform that can connect people , but for now we are keen to hear from people ( OWs , parents and past parents ) who are happy to share their experience to encourage the younger generation . Please don ’ t forget that recent experiences , such as landing your first job , can be as valuable to a VI Book man as ‘ How I came to be CEO of my business ’. We are particularly keen to hear from women in the Win Coll Soc membership to give balanced representation on our panels .
Finally , on behalf of the whole school I would like to thank our perennially generous community for their financial support of our charitable aims . From time to time we receive very generous anonymous donations . These are most welcome and I would like to express our sincere gratitude for your support . You help us fund projects around the school which might otherwise not happen , so , in the hope that you are reading this , I thank you all , too .
