No . 131 The Trusty Servant
We Will Remember Them
Steve Davies , a former Green Jacket who restores military graves in his spare time , has repaired and cleaned the grave of two Wykehamist brothers at St Andrew ’ s Church , Fairlight , East Sussex . Robert Burton ( C , 1896-1900 ) died in 1915 from wounds sustained the Battle of Neuve Chapelle . His younger brother Maurice ( C , 1907-10 ) died on active service while working at the War Office in London in 1942 .
Robert ’ s twin , Stephen ( C , 1896-1900 ), was killed at Boesinghe in 1917 just before the Battle of Passchendaele and is buried in Belgium . An older brother , Arthur ( C , 1891-95 ) died in 1899 from wounds sustained in the Battle of Belmont during the Boer War and is buried in Wynberg , Cape Town . Thus all four brothers died across three wars .
Although Steve has done a fine job , he says that the restoration is ‘ not as good as it could be , as it would need structural work to repair and level the very heavy marble slabs .’ Readers can find out more about Steve Davies ’ s work at www . facebook . com / MilitaryGraveRestorer .
Manors Makyth Man
Readers will recall from November ’ s issue the launch of a new project to produce a leaflet and walk for each of the parishes and manors which William of Wykeham made part of his foundation . Adam Rattray ( Co Ro , 19- ) has completed the first offering , on Kingsclere . The map is depicted above and the route has been tested and given the seal of approval by the Headmaster and his wife : ‘ We never went wrong , so clear were the instructions , and we had the most fantastic time : amazing views and a really chirpy and entertaining commentary .’ Work is in progress on 14 further walks from the list of 65 . Volunteers for the remainder are eagerly sought and should contact Lucy Hambidge via ljh @ wincoll . ac . uk , specifying a rough geographical area .
