Although it has the potential to transform the economic landscape for years to come, everyone appears to be taking comfort from opinion polls that predict a two-to-one vote in favour of remaining in the eurozone. However, the only thing polls have taught us in the past few years is they are not to be trusted. The UK came within a hair’s breadth of being dismantled in the Scottish referendum, despite the fact an easy win was predicted for the Better Together campaign, while not even the most optimistic Tory expected to win a majority in the General Election. The next issue of Trustnet Magazine will consider what will happen if Britain votes to leave the eurozone – its impact on every aspect of the UK’s finances, from currency to housing, whether the effect is positive or negative. We will also look at other black swan events from history – why no one saw them coming and what effect they had on investors who were unprepared. Our sector focus will fall on emerging markets, which had to deal with the Asian crisis in the late 1990s and even in the past few weeks has felt the full force of the collapse in China’s stock market.
