hile asking my father whether he has
built up a nest egg for me is likely to
lead to a conversation about just how
much it costs to raise a child from birth to the
age of 18, when exactly I would like to start
reimbursing him for this outlay and the very
competitive rates of interest he is willing to
charge on a sum of this size, some parents take a more generous
approach to their children’s finances. Adam Lewis is one such
parent – in this issue, he reveals how he is planning to use
investment trusts to begin saving for his daughter’s wedding –
despite the fact she is only three years old.
His article forms part of the central theme of this month’s issue
of Trustnet Magazine – using investment trusts to invest for your
children. On the same subject, Pádraig Floyd looks at how the
structure and superior long-term performance of these products
could make them the ideal savings vehicle for this purpose,
while I look at the differences between Child Trust Funds and
Junior ISAs and how to transfer your child’s money from the
former to the latter.
Using the assumption that you will want to get some
diversification into a portfolio with such a long-term outlook,
Cherry Reynard looks at three regional AIC sectors that don’t
get an enormous amount of attention from investors – North
America, Europe and Japan.
Away from our major theme, the second article in John
Blowers’ retirement series asks whether it is best to buy an
annuity as soon as you retire or move into flexi-drawdown;
Rathbones’ James Thomson reveals three stocks he is buying
to play the theme of healthcare; and Momentum’s James
Klempster explains why he is using the Schroder Recovery fund
to benefit from what he calls “one of the most attractively valued
developed markets in the world” – the UK.
All in all, there is a wide spread of investment commentary
and analysis in this issue – ideal if you have a large debt you
need to pay off…
Enjoy reading.
