EDITOR’S LETTER IN THIS ISSUE Issue 24 / December 2016 I Our outlook for every sector next year The trusts the experts hope to find in their stocking The tiny charges that add up to thousands ISSUE 24 CREDITS TRUSTNET MAGAZINE (FORMERLY INVESTAZINE) IS PUBLISHED BY THE TEAM BEHIND FE TRUSTNET IN SOHO, LONDON. WEBSITE: WWW.TRUSTNETDIRECT.COM EMAIL: [email protected] CONTACTS: T IS TRADITIONAL AT THIS TIME OF YEAR to ask the experts for their predictions about how the next 12 months will pan out. However, with few if any analysts correctly calling the big events of 2016, you could be forgiven for asking “what’s the point?”. While I can empathise with this view, there does seem to be a greater consensus among analysts this time around about how the next year will develop – love him or loathe him, at least everyone seems to have an idea of how Donald Trump’s term in the White House will affect markets. Read Adam Lewis’s article on page 22 to read the experts’ outlook on every sector in 2017. Amid all the hysteria about Trump and Brexit, many people seem to have forgotten about the other seismic events that took place in 2016. For example, who remembers the Chinese stock market falling by 7 per cent within minutes of opening this year? Read Daniel Lanyon’s review of 2016 over the page to jog your memory. On page eight meanwhile, Cherry Reynard finds out how some of the biggest names in the AIC universe have performed over the past 12 months. In our regular columns, John Blowers explains how the “tiny” charges associated with investing can add up to tens of thousands of pounds, SWMC’s Stuart Mitchell reveals which three stocks he is tipping to bounce back from recent share price weakness and Standard Life’s Bambos Hambi tells us which fund he is using to protect against the impact of rising yields. From everyone at Trustnet Magazine, have a merry Christmas and we will see you in the new year. 22 14 30 Anthony Luzio Editor T: 0207 534 7652 Art direction & design Javier Otero W: www.feedingcrows.co.uk Editorial Gary Jackson Editor (FE Trustnet) T: 0207 534 7680 Lauren Mason Senior reporter T: 0207 534 7625 Jonathan Jones Reporter T: 0207 534 7640 Anthony Luzio Editor Trustnet Magazine Sales Richard Fletcher Head of publishing sales T: 0207 534 7662 Richard Casemore Account manager T: 0207 534 7669 Photos supplied by Thinkstock and Photoshot Cover illustration: Javier Otero In association with: TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED Daniel Lanyon looks back at 2016 – a year that took everyone by surprise P. 2-7 / 50 YEARS AND COUNTING With income becoming ever harder to find, salvation may come from a trust that has raised its dividend in every year since 1966 P. 8-9 / UPPER TRUSTS Cherry Reynard finds out how some of the biggest names in the AIC universe have performed over the past 12 months P. 10-12 / ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS Anthony Luzio asks three experts which investment trusts they hope to find in their stocking this year P. 14-16 / FUND, PENSION, TRUST Schroder Recovery, Monks Investment Trust and Vanguard LifeStrategy 100% Equity find themselves under the spotlight this month P. 18-20 / FOR WHAT IT’S WORTH… Adam Lewis asks the experts for their outlook on every sector next year P. 22-25 / STING IN THE TAIL John Blowers reveals how the many “tiny” charges associated with investing can add up to tens of thousands of pounds P. 26-28 / ON THE REBOUND SWMC’s Stuart Mitchell reveals which three stocks he is tipping to bounce back from recent share price weakness P. 30 / WHAT I BOUGHT LAST Standard Life’s Bambos Hambi is using TwentyFour Absolute Return Credit for protection against the impact of rising yields P. 31
