I should be able to take more risk than popular wisdom dictates because I will have a time horizon of more than 20 years . Retirees didn ’ t use to have that luxury . What I don ’ t want to be doing in retirement is selling down investments at a loss , for example in a market downturn , as this will just accelerate my portfolio ’ s decline . I ’ ve previously preached the use of cash in combination with higher-risk investments , allowing you to dig into reserves in downturns and harvest your gains in rising markets , so I won ’ t go over that again .
