Editor ’ s letter

As I write this , falling snow appears to be cheering up the nation following England ’ s quarter-final exit from the World Cup .
Mixed emotions are also at play in markets – the icy conditions have caused a spike in natural gas prices , leading to worries inflation will stay higher for longer in the UK and Europe , while CPI in the US has just come in at 7.1 %, well below expectations .
It helps to bear these dichotomies in mind when looking back at the past 12 months . As Danielle Levy explains in Trustnet Magazine ’ s review of the year , the UK ’ s multiple political implosions are difficult to square with the status of the FTSE All Share as the bestperforming major index in 2022 , while the strengthening dollar has propped up returns for investors in the falling US market .
But it is even more important to remember these nuances when reading up on fund recommendations and investment outlooks for the year ahead – while low starting valuations and the prospect of more accommodative monetary policy bode well for markets in 2023 , anyone expecting a smooth ride over the next 12 months hasn ’ t been paying attention .
Nevertheless , everyone at Trustnet Magazine would like to wish you a merry Christmas , and we hope to see you next year .
Enjoy reading ,
