Platforms & Pensions

Fidelity Personal Investing

Fidelity has some of the best pensions resources around and I particularly like its retirement calculator . This illustrates how much your desired lifestyle will cost , then helps you formulate a plan to achieve it . Simple and brilliant . The rest of the calculators / planners just assume what someone will want in retirement , with no acknowledgement that we all have different hopes and dreams – some of us will aspire to travel or live in luxury by the sea , while others may seek self-sufficient solitude on a Scottish isle . I also love the way Fidelity categorises what you should pay attention to at different life stages . But while it ’ s genuinely engaging , like all the big platforms it has crushed its retirement content into a section on its main site , and doesn ’ t have room to be genuinely cohesive . The features are excellent , offering access to great products , advisers on a pay-as-you-go basis and even free phone-based guidance . Written content and downloadable guides are useful and the six planners and calculators are superb and well organised . Drawdown options are well explained and there is a thorough if non-incentivised section on pensions consolidation with Fidelity , where its phone-based retirement specialists could prove invaluable . Costs are reasonable given the level of support and content at the user ’ s disposal . Overall , Fidelity is excellent and if it could spread its wings a little more and lose the distractions of the rest of the site , it would – for my money at least – be the best retirement platform in the UK .
Cost per annum *: £ 500
