A value approach is not the only style that has been out of favour over the medium to long term – particularly in the US , where any sort of overweight to the tech giants has been all that is needed to outperform . However , Richard Cole , a fund manager at Future Money , notes that
Premier Miton US Opportunities has beaten the S & P 500 over the past five years , despite avoiding the most in vogue of sectors . “ This is a US equity fund whose managers are fearful of valuations in tech and have been underweight here ,” explains Cole . “ Despite this , the fund has held its own nicely against the US market over the last couple of years , when its style has
been a headwind . Over the past few months , when its style has turned to a tailwind , it has been particularly strong .” Nick Ford ( pictured above ) and Hugh Grieves ( pictured below ) run the £ 1.2bn fund with a bias to small and mid caps . They are wary of becoming infatuated with a certain style that may propel them to the top of the charts in the short term , as it may leave them exposed when the wind turns against it . “ We didn ’ t want to do that , we wanted a fund that could consistently compound returns over time and give clients a steady ride ,” Grieves told Trustnet back in 2019 . “ If some funds are tortoises and some funds are hares , we stick our hands up and proudly say ‘ we are a tortoise !’”
