Quantum computing

Quantum computing is a theme that has yet to take off , but could prove to be a gamechanger for future generations . The most advanced computers currently use bits , which function like switches : they are either on or off , represented by a one or a zero . However , quantum computing uses qubits , which can be on and off at the same time , or somewhere between the two , increasing their computing power exponentially . This makes them perfect for analysing and modelling data . Numerous Baillie Gifford trusts – including Scottish Mortgage and Schiehallion – have exposure to this theme through PsiQuantum , which is aiming to build the world ’ s first quantum computer . The Schiehallion managers say this could solve important problems that can ’ t be addressed by classical computing : “ To take one currently unsolved problem : high-fidelity molecular simulation could give the world new fertilisers , superior battery chemistries , efficient carboncapture solutions and in silico drugs .” While you may be getting excited about a theme you hadn ’ t heard of just two minutes ago , the same rules of investing apply , based on the starting valuation , margins , barriers to entry and so on . If nothing else , remember the lesson of the dotcom bubble : just because something will change the world , it doesn ’ t mean you ’ re going to make any money out of it . / 28 /
