Danielle Levy finds investing her daughter ’ s Junior ISA a far more daunting prospect than investing for herself

Baby steps

As a financial journalist , I have written about potential fund and investment trust picks for ISAs year in and year out ; it is now time to eat my own cooking . At the end of the last tax year , I set up a Junior ( stocks & shares ) ISA , or JISA , for my daughter Leah , who is almost two years old . I must admit that since the portfolio went live , I have been filled with nerves and I am yet to invest . While I feel comfortable investing my own stocks & shares ISA , Leah ’ s JISA brings an extra level of accountability : my investment decisions are answerable to my daughter and husband , as well as to grandparents and great-grandparents who also contributed . Naturally , I want to achieve the best outcomes possible , so the money can potentially go towards a university education , her first car or even her first home . One thing that is becoming clear to me is that it won ’ t help anyone to keep Leah ’ s ISA balance in cash for too long . I am likely to miss out on investment opportunities and ultimately inflation
