It might help motivate him if he went to university at his own expense , and to graduate with no or little debt would give him a huge advantage .” While his daughter ’ s plans may sound more sensible , Chris was sceptical about the practicalities . “ To ‘ invest ’ for the future is well intentioned but means little ,” he says . “ Also , while her suggestion for starting a business shows aspiration , it seems premature when she is far away from having the resources to do this successfully – like a good business idea . “ An investment in property is rarely a bad decision , especially at such a young age . If she could find a way to use the money as a deposit for a house , sharing mortgage payments with her boyfriend , I would be very happy .” Abruptly bringing his daughter back down to earth , he adds : “ I would advise she protects her investment in the event of a separation .” Then there were the teenagers who thought outside the box . Grace says one of her friends would donate the money to a good cause , but wasn ’ t quite sure what , and would even consider starting her own charity . Unintended consequences Although most parents cherish the idea of giving their child a nest egg when they come of age , Grace worries it is not necessarily a “ win-win ” situation . Some of her friends admitted they weren ’ t responsible enough to be given a large amount of money and that it could potentially add to their stress levels when they had enough to worry about with exams . Others thought being exposed to a large amount of money could lull them into a false sense of security and mean they put off getting a job .
