Hacks for Sustainable Eats

By AMY SEADLER , Glacier Run Keeper II
“ What ’ s for dinner ?” That ’ s the age-old question , isn ’ t it ? The smallest decisions we make about what we eat can make a huge difference to animals and habitats worldwide . Below are four tips to help you eat more sustainably !
• Choose foods that contain sustainable or no palm oil . Palm oil is used in 50 percent of consumer goods . Deforestation caused by palm oil is also currently the greatest threat to wild orangutans due to loss of habitat .
• Shop your local farmers market . Support your local economy and cut down on greenhouse gas emissions at the same time simply by choosing food that has traveled a shorter distance to get to you .
• Ditch the disposable chopsticks and utensils ! Most of us know plastic utensils aren ’ t a great choice for the environment — but did you know the wood felled for some disposable chopsticks is resulting in critical habitat loss — particularly for salamanders , which are an indicator of environmental health ? Instead , choose reusable chopsticks and utensils . Learn more about conservation of salamanders at fcsal . org .
• Choose your fish carefully . Unsustainable fishing practices hurt the ecosystems of ocean animals like seals and sea lions , making it difficult for them to find food ! For more info visit seafoodwatch . org or download the Seafood Watch app for help on the go .
