Butterfl y
Exhibit
Opening May 20!
NEW FOR
2017!
Experience hundreds of graceful
native butterfl ies sipping nectar from
colorful fl owers, basking in the sun-
light and fl ying freely as you wander
through our new 1000 sq. ft. outdoor
fl ight house located across from the bongo
exhibit. Free with the Zoo admission May 20
through September 24, weather permitting.
Discover your butterfl y IQ. See if you can identify
monarchs, swallowtails and painted ladies from amongst
over 600 winged beauties representing dozens of native
species. Learn about the types of nectar and host plants
needed to sustain butterfl ies throughout their life cycle:
from egg to caterpillar to chrysalid to butterfl y. If you're
lucky, you'll have the chance to see a butterfl y emerge.
Bring a camera to capture your encounters with these
delicate, brilliantly colored creatures. Leave with a better
understanding of the environment and protections needed
for the survival of these beautiful animals — plus ways to
help them thrive in your own backyard.
Our butterfl y adventure culminates with the tagging
and release of 1,000 Monarch butterfl ies at Flutter Fest
on Sept. 23 brought to you by Louisville's Idlewild Butterfl y
Farm. This coincides with the annual migration of monarch
butterfl ies. The Louisville Zoo will be designated as a
Monarch Way Station.
