KIDS FOR CONSERVATION SAVE THE PLANET... THERE'S EVEN A PRIZE! By Kathleen Johnson, Diane Moon and Kelsey Curry The New Year is a time of celebration. We celebrate our friends, our families and the wonderful adventures we’ve had throughout the year. It’s also a great time to reflect on our role in the delicate balance of our planet, and consider ways we can help the earth to thrive for all living things. There are many small actions we can take to be more sustainable; below is a checklist to help you get started! Complete all of the challenges and post a picture of yourself with the list on the Louisville Zoo Facebook page by January 31, 2018 to be entered into a drawing for a FREE week of camp at the Louisville Zoo! My SUSTAINABILITY CHECKLIST Name ______________________________________ Using Less Energy ‰ ‰ Turn off the lights every time you leave a room. ‰ ‰ Turn off power strips when you leave the house. ‰ ‰ Adjust your thermostat down by two degrees during the winter. ‰ ‰ Use cold water to wash your clothes and then let them hang to dry. ‰ ‰ Ditch the electronics and head outside! Using Less Water ‰ ‰ Water your outdoor plants in the morning to prevent evaporation. ‰ ‰ Use the remaining water in your bottle to water your plants or fill your pet’s water bowl. ‰ ‰ Time your shower; how many minutes do you take a shower each day? ‰ ‰ Reduce your shower by one minute. ‰ ‰ When brushing your teeth, don’t leave the water running.  SPOTTED IN "THE WILD" AT Facebook.com/LouisvilleZoo Creating Healthy Habits ‰ ‰ Bring your own reusable bags when you go to the grocery or don’t use the plastic produce bags. ‰ ‰ Have a trash-free lunch by using reusable containers for your meal. ‰ ‰ Use a reusable water bottle rather than going to the vending machine. ‰ ‰ Plant an herb or vegetable. ‰ ‰ Make a meatless meal; meat production adds to air and water pollution. Wasting Less ‰ ‰ Pick up litter in your neighborhood or park — be sure to wear gloves and bring a trash and recycling bag! ‰ ‰ Avoid single use plastics like straws and disposable utensils. ‰ ‰ Eat leftovers for dinner tonight. ‰ ‰ Print one less piece of paper. ‰ ‰ Go one whole day without creating any waste. If you can do one day, try two days, or a week — keep it going as long as possible! Louisville Zoo Trunkline • Winter 2017 • 19
