Small Patrons with Big Hearts
A couple of our smallest Zoo supporters made a BIG difference this fall by
taking action to help the Zoo and wildlife!
Frazier Watt, age 5, said he wants to grow up to be an animal expert. His
favorite thing about the Zoo is the HerpAquarium, especially the rare white
alligator. Frazier loves the Zoo so much he wanted to raise money “to help the
animals and provide them food.” So, he had his birthday at our Papa John’s
Splash Park and asked all his friends to bring donations for the Zoo instead of
presents. What a wonderful way to celebrate and help our animal friends!
Jack Mcintyre, age 11, wants to be a conservationist
when he grows up. He loves elephants and his favorite
thing about the Zoo is learning about animals that need
help. He attended Zoo camp and was so moved by
what he learned about elephants, that he decided to
take a pledge and stand with 96Elephants — one of the
Louisville Zoo’s wildlife conservation partners. Jack set up
a collection box, asking his class, friends and family for
help. He donated a year’s worth of collections to the Zoo:
half to support Zoo elephants Mikki and Punch and the
other half to support 96Elephants.

A Puma Pal
This fall, our puma Becca
received a cool new climbing structure thanks to our
Associate Veterinarian Dr. Julie Ter Beest’s father, Jim
Ter Beest (pictured above), who donated his time and
services to build the structure made of eucalyptus and
ceder. The design concept, with multiple platforms for
the cat's enrichment, was a vision of Zoo keeper Sam
Clites. The structure took almost 40 hours to build
and another 25 hours to install. The installation was
facilitated by Zoo staff who dug holes, secured the
posts in concrete and assembled the decks. Becca is
already enjoying her new gift. Thanks Jim!
