Zoo Solar Panels Recognized at Sustainability Summit
The Louisville Zoo was recently recognized as a “ Sustainability Champion ” at the 2016 Metro Louisville Sustainability Summit for our education efforts and projects . Earlier this year , we installed 30 solar panels on the Zoo ’ s administration building to help offset energy consumption and reduce our carbon footprint . The project was made possible by the estate of Sharon Kremer , educator , environmentalist , Zoo friend and advocate . A Friend of BFFs
Recently , Zoo Keeper Guy Graves , the expert behind the Louisville Zoo ’ s Black-Footed Ferret ( BFF ) Conservation Center , accepted an invitation to Chair the Association of Zoos and Aquarium ’ s Black-Footed Ferret Species Survival Program ( SSP ). Each endangered species has a dedicated SSP that manages just that species and offers recommendations based on the genetics of the managed population in North American zoos . Our Conservation Center ’ s success is due , in no small part , to Guy ’ s dedication . He has been with our program from the beginning in 1990 , allowing him to gain keen insight into the habits and behaviors of the ferrets under his care . With this vast knowledge , he has made groundbreaking contributions to the program . Other facilities often rely on expertise shared by Guy to help them solve new issues or problems that develop . Congratulations Guy !
Inside your zoo
It ’ s great to have a warm comfortable place to settle in when temperatures start falling outside . Did you know the walls of the Black-Footed Ferret Conservation Center are insulated with R30 insulation ? This insulation is a higher thickness than what is commonly used and increases thermal resistance to ensure our ferrets stay warm in the winter , cool in the summer and the center functions at peak energy efficiency all year round .
