Kick Off Party LouisvilleZoo.org/50 (Left to right) Suzanne Ronniger (former Friends of the Zoo board member) Mayor Greg Fischer, Zoo Director John Walczak From Mayor Greg Fischer On Jan. 31, 2019, the Zoo kicked off its 50th year with a grand celebration at the Olmsted. Over 400 former and current staff, board members, volunteers and docents attended. Mayor Greg Fischer and Zoo Director John Walczak welcomed all the guests and toasted to an amazing 50 years. Guests were able to sample the Zoo's special limited time 50th anniversary ice cream flavor from Comfy Cow, Polar Bear Freeze, and enjoyed a retrospective video that addressed the question "What is the value of the Louisville Zoo in our Community?" Watch it at LouisvilleZoo.org/50. I can first remember feeling appreciation for the Zoo as a child, coming to the Zoo with my mother and being in awe of these chimpanzees that didn’t seem very different from me. Our family is one of the millions who’ve found a con- nection to animals, to nature and to the earth at the Louisville Zoo. The Zoo has been and contin- ues to be a community jewel, bringing together our city values of health, lifelong learning and compassion. It's one of the many reasons we've pushed for new revenue — to ensure that assets like the Zoo aren't diminished in the face of state pension-driven budget obligations. A special thanks to our 50th anniversary committee members who are helping us make this year’s celebration possible including Annette Schnatter (chair), Jessica Thompson, Sam Stewart and Marcelle Gianelloni. It’s been an incredible team effort to get the Zoo to where it is today — from its staff, board members, volunteers and the support of our community. Stay tuned Congratulations to everyone involved with the Louisville Zoo on its 50th anniversary — five incredible decades of service to our community and a legacy that will last generations.
