Summer Preview Summer Preview Serkis, Jason Clarke James Franco may be returning as a cameo in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, but… does it really need him? Well, not really as the great apes are the stars of the film. Audiences were skeptical in the months leading up to the release of the 2011 prequel Rise of the Planet of the Apes, directed by Rupert Wyatt, but were soon quickly won over by its sharp-edged script, smart handling of the universe’s origin story, and the brilliant motion-capture performance of Andy Serkis as Caesar. This time around we see 36 truefilm.co.uk Gary Oldman, Jason Clarke, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Keri Russell in the Ape world. Set eight years after the events of the 2011 reboot, genetically modified apes roam planet Earth, as do human virussurvivors. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves to be shortlived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as planet Earth’s dominant species. Expectations are high for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, directed by Matt Reeves, and once again starring Serkis as Caesar. The trailer looks strong, and the amount of images released and new plot details help make Dawn of the Planet of the Apes one of most anticipated films of the summer. Serkis spoke to Collider at CinemaCon saying he’s excited for fans to see the new Apes film. “What I love about this film is that it’s completely different to the first film. People who enjoyed the first film may have enjoyed the domesticity of the first film, and the intimacy of seeing this young ape grow into an adult and go through all the trial and tribulations and being ousted from a human family and a father he thought was his. And then having to find his own identity as an ape and then lead them to freedom.” the inbetweeners movie 2 Photo: © Film4 RELEASE 17 July DIRECTOR Matt Reeves CAST Gary Oldman, Andy Photo: © 20th Century Fox DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES RELEASE 6 August DIRECTOR Damon Beesley & Iain Morris CAST Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison, Joe Thomas Everyone’s favourite lads – Jay, Neil, Simon and Will – are back and this time have gone ‘down under’ to Australia in The Inbetweeners Movie 2. What they will be getting up to, we don’t know, but expect the odd kangaroo and koala. After a few years of not so great British sitcom-to-film adaptions, The Inbetweeners Movie burst into British cinemas in 2011 and took an amazing £42million at the box office. This made the film the most successful British comedy of all time, and a sequel was bound to happen. There currently isn’t any news about the plot for the film, but we understand it’s a reunion of sorts for the boys. They have been spotted all over Oz, with scenes taking place at Gold Coast’s Wet’n’Wild waterpark, Byron Bay, and Maree. Will it be as successful as the original? That remains to be seen. Co-creators of the TV series, Iain Morris and Damon Beesley are returning to direct and pen the script, with all four actors – Simon Bird (Will), Joe Thomas (Simon), James Buckley (Jay) and Black Harrison (Neil) – returning once again. New boy Freddie Stroma, best known for Cormac McLaggen in the Harry Potter films, will appear as a wealthy traveller. Joe Thomas recently spoke to Digital Spy saying that this time around, he believes both the script and performances are even funnier. “The first film blew us away, we didn’t expect that level of success, but I think we can do it again.” James Buckley is remaining tight-lipped about the movie’s plot when talking to Yahoo, saying, “We’re in Australia. All I can say is that it’s been really great fun and it’s really funny. Hopefully everyone will like it.” He also revealed that there would be some nudity again, “There is. It’s what we do.” Your Reviews and True News 37
