Summer Preview Summer Preview A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST RELEASE 30 May DIRECTOR Seth MacFarlane CAST Seth MacFarlane, Charlize Theron, Amanda Seyfried 32 truefilm.co.uk Silverman and Charlize Theron. A Million Ways to Die in the West is easily the most anticipated comedy of the 2014 summer movie season, and it could well be this year’s The Hangover. But will the Western parody do for 2014 what the bachelor party did back in 2009? Only time will tell? The Hangover relied on a smooth advertising campaign, with positive word of mouth from reviewers and public audiences, it posted just under $45 million on its opening weekend and ended up grossing over $467 million worldwide. If A Million Ways to Die in the West doesn’t open as strongly, it will be seen as a disappointment to many. MacFarlane is standing centrestage for the first time in his own form and not behind that of a bear or dog, and hopes some of the glory from the film will reflect back on him, but has also said, “It’ll either be a great success or a giant disaster.” Photo: © Universal Pictures Seth MacFarlane impressed many critics in 2012 with comedy Ted. But with his second film, MacFarlane looks to change things in a big way with a comedy western. Set in 1882, A Million Ways to Die in the West tells the tale of an Arizona sheep farmer who gains the help of a gunslinger’s wife in order to win back the woman who left him.
