By the time early autumn hits southern Alberta waters, cutthroat trout tend to get more selective and that's when fishing for them becomes more challenging. There have been many times we have been standing at a nice pool and have seen cuttys rising all over the place, but no matter what you put on the end of your line they give you the snub. That's just a part of fly fishing for many species of fish and it's also when you begin to look desperately for any sign of another bug that could be their meal choice of the day. For example you start to take note of all the annoying flying ants around you and realize there new favorite thing to eat must be a little foam black ant. Tie one on and success, it does the trick.
